Phragmites

Phragmites

Phragmites (Phragmites australis):

Phragmites, also known as the common reed, is a large perennial grass which grows predominantly in temperate wetland. As they grown, the tops of the plant look like fluffy tails, and are used to spread seeds horizontally as the wind blows. They form extensive reed beds which can grow in damp soils, sands, and water up to a foot deep. These reeds are known to grow to be 5-6 meters tall given hot weather and fertile soils. Their growth is very difficult to control without the natural grazing of animals and may cause problems for other hydrophyte wetland plants of North America. Phragmites may also be fastened into flute-like instruments, which are commonly used by the people of Iran and its neighboring countries.
