Spring Peeper

Spring peeper (Pseudacris crucifer):

Living along the eastern coast of North America, the spring peeper is very small in size, measuring at a measly 1.5 inches in average length. They are normally brown, olive green and gray in color, and are easily identified by their very unique dark X-shaped marking on the top of their backs. You will generally find them in woodlands and near marshes, ponds and swamps. They are known to rally together and burst out into a chorus of peeps, hence the name, which resembles the calls of baby chickens. Interestingly enough, they frequently have to deal with subfreezing conditions during their breeding season, and are able to survive the partial freezing of their body’s fluids up to -8 degrees Celsius.
